What FASD is Not

FASD is not restricted to any one racial, ethnic or socio-economic group. It is found in all cultures, all countries and all socio-economic groups.

FASD is not a developmental delay. In fact, the problems increase and become more obvious and significant with age.

FASD is one of the leading known causes of mental disabilities but not all individuals with FASD are mentally handicapped. Many have normal IQs, but all have learning disabilities.

FASD is not about visible external problems. It is about brain damage.

FASD behaviours are not the result of poor parenting. They are the result of brain damage.

While parenting has a role to play, it does not cause the underlying problems.

FASD problems are not behavioural, emotional or environmental. They are neurological, a result of damage to the brain.
FASD is not a reason to “write the child off.” It is true that FASD cannot be cured/fixed and will not be outgrown.

Love will not fix it, but these children can and do function successfully within their capabilities if they have:

- A correct diagnosis
- Educational programs which meet their specific needs
- Caregivers who are knowledgeable about FASD
- Caregivers who advocate on their behalf
- A stable, structured living situation
